| Description | Emilia is the only one of the family in poor health at present. He gives an account of his children, commenting on Sandy, who is growing and doing well at school, but causing some anxiety, although not 'carried away with the rambling spirit of the Town's boys'. He describes the family of a Mr. Cameron, who have shown kindness to them, and in return Alexander has been giving their boys lessons in geography. Catherine has done as well as the boys, but does not join in French. Mr. Cameron is a writer, procurator fiscal and holds several offices. Alexander describes his business and routines in church, including a Gaelic lecture and catechising, and some of the people supporting him in this. He comments on the bereavement in the death 'of our dear Brother Black' [David Black] and how unlikely it is that he will visit Edinburgh again soon, or that he would travel very far from home. He notes some local preaching duties. Emilia is busy with the children and 'a great Spring washing'. The Synod of Ross meets in town, with Mr. Calder and Mr. Mackintosh attending.
