| Description | He notes his time being taken up with parish business. He has heard from Sandy of her surprise visit to him in Perth and hopes to hear more from her on his state of mind and his work. The burden of their children's education concerns Alexander and Emilia, and he laments the expense of Catherine's education, for which he claims there is a poor return. [29 July] He gives news of the Dickensons and discusses his own problems in administering the sacrament to his English congregation, 'such a carnal set'. He gives other news, and hoped that his sister might visit while in Perthshire. Emilia's health is indifferent.
