| Title | Letter from A [Alexander] Stewart, on board ship and at Leith Harbour, to Mrs [Emilia] Stewart, Manse of Dingwall |
| Creator | Stewart; Alexander (1764-1821); British Presbyterian minister and Gaelic scholar |
| Recipient | Stewart [née Calder]; Emilia (1780-1855); British |
| Date | 13-17 October 1819 |
| Description | He writes having sailed from Cromarty Roads, but with delay in the Firth, and having to return to their point of origin. Mr Sutherland joined them on board. Aftre loading wheat and provisioning they were joined by other passengers. Many of the family suffered sea-sickness. They have purchased necessaries from shore, have a keg of small beer, and he describes the cabin as small, with hard beds. [17 October Leith Harbour] They have arrived safely after a good passage. He describes the weather and their fears. The ship is supposed to be commodious, but the small cabin was 'often rendered worse by the abominable smell of bilge-water'. Catherine and Grant will go to Edinburgh to see about the house being open. |
