| Description | Alexander longs for Emilia's and the children's return and expresses concern for her health. He gives an account of tasks completed, including coals and peat laid in, with a few visitors, notably Donald Monro who has tea. He does not know how the two books given to Charles and Duncan, given by the grandfather, came to be in his pocket and therefore to Dingwall. He returns them with newspapers. In a postscript he describes a crowded church, and receiving a letter from Miss Bethune from her brother in New York. He describes the local volunteers drilling and mentions the death of the Reverend John Newton reported in a newspaper. |
