DescriptionWilliams describes the communication between the mother and foetus in viviparous animals via arteries, veins, and the placenta. He recounts experiments on the circulation of blood between the mother and foetus in various mammals.

A red ink inscription at top of covering page reads '(39) JFWH [John Frederick William Herschel]'. Below, in graphite, 'begin at p. 10' and 'To be deposited in the Archives'.

Written by Williams in Liverpool [Merseyside, England]. Communicated by Thomas Thomson. Received by the Royal Society on 16 January 1825.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper, a very similar version was published in full in the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal in 1826: Williams, David. 'On the Maternal Fœtal Circulation.' Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal, vol 25, issue 86, January 1826, pp. 87-105.
