DescriptionBarnes describes his invention of an instrument to be used for drawing ellipses on paper. He explains the design and construction of the instrument as well as how to hold the instrument to operate it effectively.

Ink inscription final page verso reads 'Not to be read' and below, in graphite, 'I cannot understand this description H.K. [Henry Kater]'. Below this is a copy in ink of Kater's comment, accompanied by John George Children's initials.
