DescriptionTuson describes his investigations of the thymus gland, determining that its purpose is to function as a blood receptacle during respiration as well as a receptacle for 'osseus' matter prior to ossification during the early stages of growth. Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 3 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'A physiological inquiry into the uses of the thymus gland'.
