DescriptionHenry explores the relationship between nerves and muscles in relation to muscular contraction, positing that nerves are the medium of excitation in muscular contraction. He recounts experiments performed on rabbits with narcotic poisons, examining how the poisons affect the nervous system. Annotations appear throughout in graphite and ink.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 3 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'A critical and experimental inquiry into the relations subsisting between nerve and muscle'.
