| Description | Herapath gives an account of a set of prisms perfectly complementary in their optical characters to those previously described by him, and proves this fact by an elaborate comparison of their various optical relations. From this comparison it appeared that whilst the first set of prisms were totally impervious to a beam of polarised light, reflected from glass plates, when the plane of the length of the prism was at right angles to the plane of polarisation, the second set of prisms were equally absorbent of a vertically polarised beam, when the plane of their length lay parallel to that of 'primitive polarisation'. Herapath describes the process of making the prisms, which involves dissolving disulphate of quinine with spirit of wine and benzoic acid, adding water and then warming the solution. He goes on to describe properties and characteristics of the prismatic crystals.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 6 of Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society] as 'Further researches into the properties of the sulphate of lodo-quinine or Herapathite, more especially in regard to its crystallography, with additional facts concerning its optical relations'. |
