Description | Pengelly explains how excavations of an area near Bovey Tracey in Devonshire have revealed a regular series of strata of lignite, clay and sand, known to geologists as the 'Bovey deposit' and the lignite known as 'Bovey coal'. Lignite is extracted from an area known as the 'coal pit'. Pengelly sets out to describe the area and the composition of the strata in more detail.
Annotations in pencil and ink throughout. Marked on front as 'Archives 1862 - a condensation of this paper was published in [Philosophical Transactions]'. Includes two figures of layers of clay and sand.
