TitleUnpublished paper, 'On the true theory of pressure as applied to elastic fluids' by Robert Moon
CreatorMoon; Robert (fl 1858-1868)
Date20 June 1862
DescriptionMoon aims to show that in elastic fluids in motion, or tending to move, it is not generally true that the pressure depends solely on the density, as is assumed in the ordinary theory of the motion of elastic fluids; and to show that, within certain limits and under certain circumstances, pressure may be transmitted instantaneously from one point of an elastic fluid to other points situated at finite distances from the first, before any change has been effected in the density of the intermediate fluid, in a manner analogous to that in which, in the theory of dynamics as applied to rigid bodies, force is assumed to be propagated instantaneously from one point to another.

Subject: Physics / Chemistry

Received 26 June 1862. Read 20 November 1862. Communicated by J J [James Joseph] Sylvester.

Written by Moon at 6 New Square [London].

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 12 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the true theory of pressure as applied to elastic fluids'.
