DescriptionWith a view to extending knowledge of the physiological effects of temperature, with particular regard to the influence of heat on the healthy system, Becher uses a voyage to China (around the Cape of Good Hope) in 1857, and a short residence at Hong Kong, in order to determine on the influence of the extreme variations of temperature incidental to that voyage, on the quantity of urine, urea, and sodium chloride excreted every 24 hours.

Marked on front as 'Archives May 21 [18]63'. Includes a map of the route taken on the voyage and a series of tables showing Becher's experimental results.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 12 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On the effect of temperature on the secretion of urea as observed on a voyage to China, and at Hong Kong'.
