DescriptionTomlinson provides a definition of supersaturation followed by a 'historical sketch' of research on the subject, noting that the phenomena of supersaturation have been studied chiefly with reference to solutions of Glauber's salt [sodium sulphate]. He goes on to discuss in detail the action of nuclei, the formulation of the modified salt.

Note on front reads 'The paper published in Phil Trans is a revised condensation of this.' Followed by an appendix dated 13 August 1868.
