TitleUnpublished paper, 'On deep sea thermometers' by J E [John Edward] Davis
CreatorDavis; John Edward (1815-1877); British hydrographer; Royal Navy officer
Date17 December 1869
DescriptionThe results of thermometric observations at great depths in the ocean not being of a satisfactory nature, the attention of Davis, the Hydrographer of the Navy, was directed to the defects in the construction of the Six's self-registering thermometers then in use, and also to the want of knowledge of the effects of compression on the bulb; and as it was known that a delicate thermometer was affected in vacuo, it was natural to suppose that an opposite effect would be had by placing them under pressure, and particularly such as they would be subjected to at great depths.

Marked on front as 'Feb 16/71 Archives'. Contains figures of three thermometers and a hydraulic testing apparatus.

Subject: Meteorology

Received 18 April 1870. Read 19 May 1870. Communicated by Captain [George Henry] Richards.

Written by Davis at the [UK] Hydrographic Office.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 18 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'On deep-sea thermometers'.
