| Description | Lombard outlines experimental results by William A [Alexander] Hammond which suggest that the temperature of the left side of the head is constantly higher than that of the right. Lombard aims to conduct his own research on this topic. He believes that 'the mental condition is [...] of the utmost importance [...] So marked is this influence in some persons, that the mere curiosity excited by seeing, for the first time, the movements of the spot of light of a reflecting galvanometer will cause a marked rise of temperature in the head.'
Marked on front as 'Archives June 27/78'. Includes two figures, and a letter from H [Henry] Charlton Bastian to [Thomas Henry] Huxley dated 11 April 1878. Preceded by a note to the binder.

Whilst the Royal Society declined to publish this paper in full, an abstract of the paper was published in volume 27 of the Proceedings of the Royal Society as 'Experimental researches on the temperature of the head'.
Lombard published a version of this paper as 'Experimental Researches on the Regional Temperature of the Head, under Conditions of Rest, Intellectual Activity and Emotion' (London: A K Lewis, 1881). |
