Title | Unpublished statement, 'Observations and explanations relative to the subject of a letter from the right honorable Sir Joseph Banks Esq Bart K B President of the Royal Society, to Mr Russell, chargé des affaires of the United States, at the Court of London, dated Soho Square, 6th Feby 1812' by [Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford] |
Date | 20 February 1812 |
Description | Statement by Rumford regarding his knowledge of the regulation excluding unoriginal papers from the Transactions of the Royal Society and stating he will prove that he did not have the intention to go against this rule. He said that this same paper, in French, on the subject of light was read at the Institut in Paris [France], but was not presented there as an original work. Twenty copies of this paper were printed for 'private use', one of which was sent to Humphry Davy who subsequently gave the copy to Banks, both assuming the paper had been published. Rumford acknowledges that he should have provided more context to prevent confusion.
