| Description | "Is puzzled by the conduct of the French treating the publication of the [triangulation] tables with ridicule". Elaborates on possible reasons for their attitude. Davis Gilbert is to bring the matter before the Council of the Royal Society. Will send drawings of Spring Grove and some more Passion fruit, his vines have yielded near 300 fruit, attributes it to his "manuring with bones". Has an abundance of strawberries of a new kind with a better flavour, will send plants for Countess Rumford if she wishes. Discusses his grapes, "I intend to make a few gallons of wine from them" using the recipe of Mr Hamilton of Paynes Hill. Mentions two fossil deers found in Isle of Mann. [Nathaniel] Pearce of Abyssinia has appeared in Egypt and has send home an interesting collection of birds and plants, which have been given to the British Museum. |
