| Description | Had the honour to be unanimously replaced in the chair for the 41st time. "I have now presided 40 years I hope not uselessly" Gilbert has returned and will lay the proposal of printing the tables before the first meeting of the new [RS] Council, he will visit Paris in the Spring. An Egyptian statue highly spoken of by Lambe has arrived [at the British Museum], it is made of red sand stone of very minute grain. Discusses Mr Hamilton and payment for Scott's copy of the Egyptian work. Has sent third part of Philosophical Transactions containing Kater's pendulum observations. Has seen little of M Gerard since dining with him, "we have become more obliging than of late to French men of science". Asked Brande to call on Gerard to give him details of the lighting of the Apothecaries Hall with oil gas. Discusses sugar made from rags and phosphoresence of healing wounds. Pond is uncomfortably ill. Clift was much delighted with the friendly civilities he received from Blagden and his French friends, retells some of Clift's observations on Paris. |
