Description | Informs the Royal Society that Mr [Godfrey] Locker Lampson, Honorary Secretary of the British Empire Cancer Campaign, has asked the Medical Research Council to consider its promotors' proposals, and if possible to give their support to the campaign. The Medical Research Council have unanimously agreed: (1) they support the effort to increase financial support for medical research work, and have sympathy for this cause; but (2) they cannot approve all the terms of the proposed Appeal to the public; (3) they think that relatively small sums of money are needed for direct work on cancer, and relatively large sums should be fruitfully spent on supporting general medical research work, which are more likely to turn up clues towards solving the cancer problem; (4) that the Executive Council of the Campaign should not be left to distribute all the money alone, as it contains nobody with firsthand knowledge of cancer research, and few scientific researchers at all. Worries that good scientific labs studying cancer could miss out on funding simply because they are unknown to the Campaign, and that danger is posed by the Campaign's lack of experience. |
