Title | Letter from Walter Morley Fletcher, Medical Research Council, York Building, Adelphi. London, to [William Bate] Hardy |
Date | 16 May 1922 |
Description | The Government of Bombay [Mumbai] has decided to postpone the formation of the School of Tropical Medicine on financial grounds. The endowment promised by Sir Dorabji Tata is therefore deferred, on the failure of the Government to carry out their part of the contract. Fletcher considers this to be serious and it is deplorable that Tata'a efforts on behalf of medical science have been frustrated over a ten year period. The Royal Society should consider whether to make formal representations to Government, particularly in view of the recruitment of the two Tata Professors. Fortunately, [Charles Atwood] Kofoid had deferred leaving California and has resigned the Tata Professorship. Neil Hamilton Fairley however, quit his post in Melbourne and travelled to Bombay to take up his appointment. He has now been given six months' notice to leave. Sir Dorabji Tata has done his best to urge the Government to take over Dr Fairley's services. Fletcher encloses the relevant parts of the private letter just received by Charles James Martin from Fairley. Fletcher believes that the Royal Society should remonstrate with the Secretary of State in this intolerable injustice to Fairley. It may need to make its position publicly known, 'for indeed the Society have been as gravely deceived in the matter as Fairley himself.' |
