Title | Letter from Herbert Hall Turner, to Joseph Larmor, Secretary of the Royal Society |
Date | 20 February 1902 |
Description | Informs Larmor that he [Tuner] has been in correspondence with [Karl] Pearson and [William] Bateson regarding Bateson's paper criticising Pearson. Thinks that while this matter can be sorted quickly, the general question raised by the incident (the attitude of the Royal Society towards printing controversial papers) should be brought before Council and fairly discussed.
Feels that Pearson has been rather badly treated, considering that Bateson's paper criticising him was already in the hands of the Fellows before Pearson knew that his own paper had been accepted, and that the Secretaries seem to have blocked Weldon and Pearson's letters of protest from coming before the Council. Thinks that these things 'have produced a feeling of dissatisfaction', and that they explain why 'feeling seems a little higher than usual'. Asks Larmor to read Pearson's letter before the Council and convey him their definite answer. Encloses a private letter from Weldon. |
