Description | Summarises events: That Mr [Charles] E. Walker's paper 'The Life History of Leucocytes' was communicated to the Royal Society by Professor [Charles Scott] Sherrington, and accepted for publication. That the Chairman of the Sectional Committee expressed the opinion that there were more illustrations than necessary in the paper, and that it would be too expensive. That the preliminary estimates for the cost of the paper were very high, and so Sherrington asked the Royal Society if the illustrations could be kept in but the author [Walker] could be allowed to obtain estimates of his own for the plates. That Walker found his own cheaper estimate from Mr Lawrence, who is not an engraver himself, and the Royal Society only deals directly with engravers. That then Walker sent a letter [CD/30/4] to the Royal Society containing 'serious' imputations [that someone at the Royal Society was making money by receiving commissions from engravers], and the Royal Society asked him to apologise, which he has not. |
