TitleLetter from [Herbert Hall] Turner, to the Chairman of Board A of the Government Grant Committee
Date17 February 1903
DescriptionAdds information to the circumstances of the application of Mr [William Ernest] Cooke (Government Astronomer of the Perth Observatory, Australia) for a Government Grant. Explains that Perth Observatory is part of the 18 observatories working on the International Astrographic Chart, but that the Australian Government planned to dismiss the staff working on the project, until a letter from the Royal Society and the Colonial Office prevented this - so the [astronomical] plates will be taken. However, explains that the Observatory does not have enough money to measure the [astronomical] plates it has taken or to complete the scheme, and suggests that they could be measured in England much more cheaply. Explains that Turner will do the measurements himself, and has applied to the Royal Society for a grant from the Colonial Office.
