| Description | Explains that the Australian Government promised in 1900 that the Perth Observatory would take a share of the work of the International Astrographic Chart, but that they have now instructed Cooke to discontinue this work and dismiss the officers working on it. Notes that the Australian Parliament may refuse to sanction such a step. Appeals to the Royal Society for a grant for measuring the catalogue plates, an essential function. Suggests that if the Royal Society could undertake the measurement, that it should be done by Professor [Herbert Hall] Turner of Oxford, who has shown such an interest in this work. Also expresses relief that in this appeal Cooke has not had to argue the importance of the scientific work or what immediate monetary profit it will have [possibly because Sir William Huggins is also an astronomer]. |
