DescriptionThe diagram consists of a cane shaped glass, the quicksilver being represented by shading.

Because the air incumbent upon A is equal in weight to the cylinder of quicksilver BC, therefore the quicksilver keeps at that altitude above AB. And because the whole cane and quicksilver ABCD is hanging at D and becuase the cylinder of BC is counterballanced by the air upon A; therefore at D is the weight of the whole cane, quicksilver and air.
