Title | Paper, description of the diamond mines on the Coromandel Coast in India by Henry Howard |
Date | [1667] |
Description | Notes that diamonds are found in Borneo and India, also in Pegu [Bago, Myanmar formerly Burma] where they are not mined. Describes the geographical and political landscape of coal mining on the Coromandel Coast, south east India. Hindu Rajahs own the mines found in the Cape Comorin mountains of Bengal and operate secretievely to protect them from invaders. The information in the paper concerns mines about which more is known, those in the kingdoms of Golconda (names of 23 mines given with the geology of the area and character of the diamonds) and Visiapore (the character of 15 known mines described). Paper also describes the typical ethnicity of those engaged in diamond mining in India, from miners, adventurers and labourers to merchants, and how the trade is governed in each kingdom by the Kings and 'Telinga Braminee' [Telugu Brahmin].
