DescriptionDescribes the death by fumes of out of work colliers who resorted to excavating too near old mining 'wastes' at Lord Sinclair's coalpit in Scotland after the collapse of the main room they were mining. Breaking through to the 'wastes', areas that that had previously been mined, released 'bad air' containing not only 'Damp' but 'stifling fumes and vapours' caused by fires that burned underground for years.
