The Royal Society established the South East Asia Rainforest Research Programme (SEARP) in 1985 in response to mounting concerns about the future of the South East Asian rainforests in the face of direct human impacts and global environmental change. SEARP's mission is to enable excellent scientific research and training in the rainforests of Borneo, and in 2005 the Programme's core funding was renewed by the Royal Society for a fifth quinquennium under the theme 'Supporting biodiversity and biogeochemical flux research in tropical rainforests'. Chaired by Professor Charles Godfray FRS, SEARP is based at the Danum Valley Field Centre in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Widely accepted as the leading tropical rainforest research station in South East Asia, the field centre lies on the border of the 438 square kilometre Danum Valley Conservation Area. The area is one of the largest and most important lowland primary forest protected areas in tropical Asia, and is embedded in a 10,000 square kilometre forest concession managed by the Sabah Foundation - a charitable organization which uses income from its natural forest and plantation resource base to fund welfare, educational and conservation intiatives in Sabah. |
