Description | Committee appointed by Council at a meeting of 26 May 1898, item 8 where a letter was read from ' the Chairman of the Meteorological Council containing proposals for the establishment of a system of superannuation for the Meteorological Office. Resolved, that ' the letter be referred to a Committee consisting of the President and Officers, Captain Abney, Professor W G Adams, Professor Clifton, Mr A B Kempe, Lord Rayleigh, and Professor Schuster, with power to confer with the Meteorological Council. '

At back of volume; printed letter of 11 May 1898 from Richard Strachey, Chairman of the Meteorological Council to the President of the Royal Society, reluctantly concluding that 'in order to secure the satisfactory working of the Meteorological Office it will be necessary to make provision for establishing a system of superannuation for the clerical staff; and that this can only be effected by means of some increase to the present annual grant made by Parliament, unless a reduction be made in the expenditure on the objects which constitute the regular work of the office, in respect to which the Parliamentary grant was originally fixed. '
