RelatedMaterialEast Asia Rainforest Research Programme. This was established in the early 1980's in response to mounting concern for the future of tropical rainforests, and out of a conviction that British scientists have a major contribution to make towards increasing knowledge of how such systems work and can be conserved, thruough innovative, rigorous and quantitative research.
In 1985, the South -east Asia Rainforest Research (SEARRP) committee, appointed by the Royal Society, initiated a long-term, multidisciplinary research and training prgramme, centred at the Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC)
Throughout the programme, key aims have been to enhance the UK contribution to tropical rain forest research, to train UK and SE Asian young scientists in toipical environmental research, and to contribute to the development of SE Asian rain-forest science and forest and conservation strategies.
Royal Society funds have mainly provided research infrastructure and support. Some funding has been provided for travel grants, which has acted as a pump-primer to secure additional reserch finding. The Society's support has been fundamentally catalytic, with its main role facilitation. The science conducted at DVFC is mainly supported by independent grants.
In 2004 the Society's Finance and General Purpose Committee agreed to continue fuinding SEARRP for a final quinquennium (with funding tapering down during these five years). The Society;s final payment, therefore, will be made from the 2009-2010 Parliamentary Grant Account budget. The Society has funded the project since its inception and the idea is to encourage it to be self-supporting so that it is sustainable for the long term.
