The Committee considered a reference from the War Committee ' to consider the methods of exempting persons from active service who are essential to the work of research in the laboratories of the country and to take action.'
Dr S J Chapman a member of the Reserved Occupations committee of the Board of Trade attended and conferred with the Committee, and after discussion it was resolved ' that the Reserved Occupations Committee be approached with a view to their accepting as employed in a "reserved occupation" persons who are occupied upon scientific work in connection with the war, and persons who in the opinion of the Royal Society are essential for the prosecution of such work. '
It was further resolved 'that the War Badges Department be approached with a view to securing exemption from enlistment for the persons defined in the previous resolution. '
It was agreed that in interpreting the above definition consideration should be given to names submitted by Universities, University Colleges, and technical schools recognised by Universities. ' |
