Description	Present at the meeting: Sir William Crookes, President, in the chair; Sir Alfred KEmpe; Professor A Schuster; Mr W B HArdy; Dr D H Scott; Dr dugald Clerk; Professor P Frankland; Sir J J Thmson; Professor A N Whitehead 1. Read and signed minutes of previous meeting 2. Dr Schuster reported he had sent a letter to the Reserve Occupations Committee of the Board of Trade in pursuance of the resolution of the Committee. he had also obrained an interview with professor Adams of the War Badges Department and discussed with him the conditions under which the Department might be prepared to grant War badges. 3. Professor Frankland reported on the conference with Mr Macleod's Committee (Reserved Occupations) of the Board of Trade and himself, Professor Grossley and Dr Forster, and after discussing the question of exemption of trained chemists from military service, the Committee agreed to introduce into their schedule of reserved occuptions a group defined somewhat on the following lines; "Chemists (Research, Analytical and consulting) - the following should not be permitted to join the colours- (a) Fellows and Associates of the Institute of Chemistry and other chemists, unless vouched for by the Royal Society as not indispensable (b) Head Laboratory attendants " It was agreed that the arrangements proposed be approved by this Committee 4. Agreed a circular letter be sent to the Vice Chancellors of Universities, Principals of University Colleges and all Technical Schools recognised by the Universities. [copy attached] 5. Agreed this Committee consititute itself the ultimate tribunal to consider the claims for exemption from military service of the persons whose names are submitted under the above resolution; but that the Secretaries of the Royal Society have power to act at once in obvious and urgent cases.
