Title'Report on the agricultural prospects and political situation in the districts of Bugungu and Chiopi'
Date4 November 1905
DescriptionPrepared by Assistant Collector A G Speke. Describes his tour through the districts of Bugungu and Chiopi. Makes notes on industry and the efforts of natives to grow food and cotton. Describes the attitude toward tax collection among the Bungungu. Found no trace of sleeping sickness in Kimole. Attempted to surprise another village 'before they had time to remove the sick as they are said to do on the approach of Europeans' but found no trace of the diesase, so decided to return to Masindi. Suggests that although Buungu 'is not capable of producing a large export trade, it is quite rich in native products, and under a firm and capable Saza no difficulty should be experienced in obtaining a satisfactory tax review'. [Part of a printed despatch from Commissioner J Hayes Sadler to the Secretary of State for the Colonies.] Bound between pages 44 and 45.
