Commencing with a list of Council members present: Francis Baily; Samuel Hunter Christie; John Frederick Daniell; Thomas Galloway; Thomas Graham; Sir John Frederick William Herschel; Francis Kiernan; John William Lubbock; George Rennie; Peter Mark Roget; John Forbes Royle; Reverend Adam Sedgwick; Charles Wheatstone; Reverend Robert Willis; the President, Spencer Joshua Alwyn Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Adam Sedgwick and Robert Willis made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Mr. Few to take steps to obtain the £1,200 annuities mentioned in the letter of Messrs. Walker and Coulthurst. Mr. Daniell gave notice of the resolutions he intended to propose at the next meeting, full text entered into the minutes: on abstracts and the printing of papers in Philosophical Transactions. J. Pereira elected by ballot a member of the Committee on Botany. Aplication from Dr. Royle on behalf of the Royal Asiatic Society, for permission to analyse samples of black cotton soil from India, granted. President reported on an audience with Lord Minto regarding the Antarctic Expedition, which would be undertaken by the Government, probably from June. President reported on a satisfactory audience with Lord Melbourne and Mr. Spring Rice on the establishment of fixed magnetic observatories.
