DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Francis Baily; John George Children; Samuel Hunter Christie; John Frederick Daniell; Charles Giles Bridle Daubeny; Thomas Galloway; Francis Kiernan; John William Lubbock; George Rennie; Peter Mark Roget; John Forbes Royle; Captain William Henry Smyth; Dr. Robert Bently Todd; Charles Wheatstone; Reverend Robert Willis; the President, Spencer Joshua Alwyn Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Dr. Daubeny made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. The President appointed the Reverend J. J. Ellis to preach the Fairchild Lecture. Major Sabine was called in and stated that the Master General of the Ordnance had received instructions from the government that magnetic observatories were to be established in Canada, St. Helena, and the Cape of Good Hope; no time would be lost in finding suitable candidates to man them. Mr. [George Perfect] Harding requested permission to copy two of the Society's portraits, granted. Captain Derham applied for an extension for admission to the Fellowship, granted. Four resolutions on abstracts and the refereeing of papers in Philosophical Transactions, to be communicated to members of the scientific committees. Letter from Mr. Few, stating that Mr. Bethune had accepted the role of referee in the dispute between the Royal Society and Mr. Panizzi. List of bills for printing and engraving. A copy of the Library Catalogue to be given to Foreign Members and those institutions entitled to Philosophical Transactions. Dr. [John] Davy applied for leave to publish papers of Sir Humphry Davy; and his own papers for a different work, both granted.
