DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Francis Baily; John Frederick Daniell; Thomas Galloway; Thomas Graham; Sir John Frederick William Herschel; Francis Kiernan; Peter Mark Roget; John Forbes Royle; Charles Wheatstone; the Treasurer, John William Lubbock, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from Sir John Barrow, Admiralty, 28 June 1839, to President and Council of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: enclosing a letter from the Marquis of Normanby, transmitting a meteorological journal kept at London, Upper Canada. Letter from Mr. Few, enclosing an opinion of Mr. Loftus Wigram on Sir Clifton Winteringham's legacy, Mr. Few to act as advised by the opinion; the letter also contained a judgement on the Mablethorpe cause and a meeting was to be held on the proper steps to be taken. Mr. Roberton to have leave of absence for one month, the Library to be closed and books to be returned by 15 August. Mr. Daniell applied for 100 copies of his paper in Philosophical Transactions, granted. Letter from J. D. Dickinson, East India House, 9 July 1839, to the President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: a response to the report of the Joint Committee of Physics and Meteorology, alterations to instruments have been sanctioned, Major Jervis will remain in the country for one more month to be trained with magnetic instruments, the names of officers to be trained by Professor Lloyd to be communicated in the future. Mr. Galloway reported that the Royal Astronomical Society's two invariable pendulums and one clock would be lent to the Antarctic Expedition. A new form of candidates' certificate was approved. The President to write to the Pacha of Egypt to recommend the magnetic circular. Resolution of the Joint Committee of Physics and Meteorology noting the importance of furnishing a second, reserve, magnetometric apparatus to the Antarctic Expedition, the Treasurer had communicated this by letter to Lord Minto. Reports of the scientific committees on the Antarctic Expedition; fifty copies of these to be printed, Dr. Roget to prepare a draft report for the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. Recommended that Captain James Clark Ross is provided with Mr. Ward's glazed cases and equipment for preserving natural history objects. Report of the Meteorological Committee with reference to a letter from Sir John Barrow: recommending the committee's general instructions on meteorological instruments. Mr. Shuckard to be instructed to compile a list of the names of manuscript letter authors and the miscellaneous manuscripts. Form of diploma for Foreign Members agreed upon.
