Commencing with a list of Council members present: Francis Baily; Sir John Barrow; Samuel Hunter Christie; John Frederick Daniell; Bryan Donkin; Thomas Galloway; Thomas Graham; Francis Kiernan; John William Lubbock; Richard Phillips; Peter Mark Roget; Major Edward Sabine; John Taylor; the President, Spencer Joshua Alwyn Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from James C. Melvill, East India House, 1 April 1840, to the Marquess of Northampton, full text entered into the minutes: noting the Royal Society's request to establish a magnetic observatory in Aden and promising to direct the Government of Bombay to make enquiries on the best means of carrying this out. Application from Mr, Henry Drummond for an extension to admission to the Fellowship, granted. List of candidates for Foreign Membership, one to be selected at the next meeting. The Report of the Committee of Physics, including Meteorology, adopted by Council and ordered to be printed.
