DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Samuel Hunter Christie; Richard Phillips; Peter Mark Roget; Dr. Richard Bently Todd; the Treasurer, John William Lubbock, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer stated that a deputation had seen Lord Melbourne to discuss the matter of a meteorological observatory near London. Letter from James C. Melvill, East India House, 19 June 1840, to the Marquess of Northampton, full text entered into the minutes: the East India Company had taken measures to establish a magnetic observatory in Aden; instruments are en route to Aden with Lieutenant Yule, and sappers and miners; thanks to be conveyed. Letter from Bentinck, Netherland Legation, Bolton Street, 16 July 1840 to the Marquess of Northampton, full text entered into the minutes: in response to the Duke of Sussex's request for information on tides along the coasts of Dutch possessions in the East Indies, lists the locations in Java and Sumatra where observations will be registered. Letter from C. Romilly, House of Commons, 13 June 1840, to John William Lubbock: the Speaker has agreed that reports of the House will be sent to the Royal Society, as formerly, but not other sessional papers, other than those on scientific topics; thanks to be conveyed. The seal of the Royal Society to be affixed to the addresses to Queen Victroia and Prince Albert.
