DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Francis Baily; Samuel Hunter Christie; John Frederic Daniell; William Hopkins; Sir John William Lubbock; George Rennie; Peter Mark Roget; Lieutenant-Colonel William Henry Sykes; Charles Wheatstone; the President, Spencer Joshua Alwyn Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from C. E. Trevelyan, Treasury Chambers, to the Marquess of Northampton, full text entered into the minutes: sanctioning a continuation of magnetic and meteorological observations for an additional three years; and enclosing a Treasury minute providing more detail, including on Sir Robert Peel's interviews with Northampton and Baron Brunow, the Russian Ambassador. Letter from the Marquess of Northampton, Somerset House, 2 June 1842, to Sir John Henry Pelly, full text entered into the minutes: Lieutenant Lefroy has been appointed to carry on the magnetic survey in North America and he requests the assistance of the Hudson's Bay Company. Resolved that Royal Medals for the year 1845 would be awarded for papers on Astronomy and for Physiology. Loyal addresses to H.M. Queen Victoria and to H.R.H. Prince Albert, full text entered into the minutes: on their escape from an assasination attempt. Letter from Sir John Frederick William Herschel, Collingwood, Hawkhurst, 1 June 1842, to the Secretary of the Committee of Physics, full text entered into the minutes: offering to construct an instrument to explore the solar spectrum, annexing photographic specimens for the committee's inspection; the committee recommend £100 from the Donation Fund for these objectives, agreed by Council. Charles Wheatstone noted that the Committee of Physics resolution that the Librarian make a catalogue of Meteorological Archives, adopted by Council. Mr. Bowman applied for 150 copies of his paper on the kidney to be printed at his expense, granted.
