DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Bowman; Henry James Brooke; Robert Brown; Dr. William Frederic Chambers; John Frederic Daniell; George Dollond; Thomas Graham; John Thomas Graves; Sir John William Lubbock; Roderick Impey Murchison; Dr. Jonathan Pereira; Peter Mark Roget; James Walker; the President, Spencer Joshua Alwyn Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. New members of Council made and signed the declaration in lieu of the oath. Appointment of Vice-Presidents. Re-appointment of committees with lists of members: Library Committee; Committee of Mathematics; Committee of Astronomy; Committee of Physics including Meteorology; Committee of Chemistry; Committee of Mineralogy and Geology; Committee of Botany and Vegetable Physiology; Committee of Zoology and Animal Physiology; each to meet for the election of Chairmen. Letter from James Blake, 27 Conduit Street, 30 November 1843, to President and Council, full text entered into the minutes: requesting two ounces of palladium from the Society's store, granted. Letter of Sir John Barrow relating to meteorological observations read and referred to the Committee on Meteorology. Meteorological observations conducted at the Royal Society's apartments to be discontinued in favour of the Greenwich Observatory. Treasurer directed to invest £1,000 in consols. The apartments of the Royal Society closed, in the absence of an Assistant Secretary. Resolved that the Assistant Secretary should in future act as Librarian, should reside in the Society's apartments, and should have a salary of £200 per annum, giving £1,000 security to the Royal Society. List of candidates for the post of Assistant Secretary, the Secretary to communicate with them on terms and conditions of employment and a Committee to be appointed to examine qualifications and testimonials.
