Commencing with a list of Council members present: Dr. John Bostock; William Bowman; Reverend Dr. William Buckland; George Dollond; Thomas Graham; Sir John William Lubbock; Roderick Murchison; Peter Mark Roget; Sir James Clark Ross; Dr. John Forbes Royle; Dr. William Sharpey; John Taylor; Reverend Robert Walker; the President, Spencer Joshua Alwyn Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Reverend Robert Walker made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Letter from A. Barclay, Hudson's Bay House, 20 February 1845, to Peter Mark Roget, full text entered into the minutes: enquiring who employed Lieutenant Lefroy, since the Royal Society did not; a reply directed that this was not in the cognizance of Council, but quoting from Edward Sabine's introduction to the published Toronto observations. Resolved that copies of the Greenwich Observations should be given to King's College and University College, with a list of recipients to be printed in Philosophical Transactions. Resolved to refer to the Committee of Physics whether to recommend to Government a continuation of magnetic and meteorological observations at Greenwich and elsewhere. Resolved that the President apply to the East India Company to give directions for the reduction of magnetical observations. Letter from Edward Sabine, Woolwich, 28 March 1845, to the Marquess of Northampton, full text entered into the minutes: enclosing a despatch from Rear Admiral Josceline Percy, Winchester, Simon's Bay, 9 January 1845, to Sidney Herbert, with news of Lieutenants Moore and Clerk making southern hemisphere observations aboard the barque Pagoda. Letter from Charles Few, Covent Garden, 22 March 1845, to Sir John William Lubbock, full text entered into the minutes: on the state of the dispute over Mablethorpe tithes brought by the Reverend Mr. Cooper, Rector of Mablethorpe, 'an obstinate man'. List of philosophical and other societies in Great Britain eligible for copies of the Proceedings, on application to the Royal Society. Thanks given to Dr. Roget for his care taken in making an index to the printed minutes of Council. Application of Dr. Pye Smith to compound his annual contribution to the Society at a reduced sum, because of his age, refused. Letter from Humphrey Lloyd, Trinity College, Dublin, 24 March 1845, to Sir John William Lubbock, full text entered into the minutes: on the rule regarding 'term-days' in the instructions for the use of magneic observatories; referred to the Committee of Physics. Application from Professor DeCandolle for copies of Philosophical Transactions, granted. Thomas Graham communicated the thanks of Professor Wohler for the grant of palladium. Consideration of a replacement Foreign Secretary, following the death of Mr. Daniell, at the next meeting of Council. Leave granted to Dr. Wardrop to mak extracts from his paper on lung function. Leave granted to Mr. Airy for 100 copies of his paper on tides in Ireland. Letter from Charles Tennyson D'Eyncourt applying for Philosophical Transactions issues, Council not deviating from established practice.
