DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Dr. John Bostock; William Bowman; Sir William Burnett; Samuel Hunter Christie; George Dollond; Thomas Graham; Sir John William Lubbock; Peter Mark Roget; Dr. William Sharpey; the President, Spencer Joshua Alwyn Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Applications for grants of Philosophical Transactions received from Thomas Maclear, S. Thompson, and Professor Schobein for observatories and libraries; the reply to be that the Society would willingly furnish copies of Proceedings to their Libraries. Letters read from Professor De Morgan regarding passages in Thompson's History of the Royal Society and Brewster's Life of Newton, these to be preserved in the archives. Letter from Captain Grover relating to anonymous letters in The Times; stating that the Editor had supressed certain passages in Grover's letter of response. The Copley Medal to be awarded to Professor Theodor Schwann. Appointment of auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. The Assistant Secretary reported the delivery of a theodolite by Schanke to Sir John Herschel, for which he has a receipt.
