Commencing with a list of Council members present: Francis Baily; Captain Francis Beaufort; Marc Isambard Brunel; John George Children; Samuel Hunter Christie; William Clift; Benjamin Gompertz; Joseph Henry Green; George Bellas Greenough; Charles Konig; Dr William George Maton; William Hasledine Pepys; Peter Mark Roget; Reverend Richard Sheepshanks; John William Lubbock, Vice President and Treasurer, in the chair.
Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Gompertz and Greenough sworn in as members of the Council. Dividends from the Donation Fund granted to the Trustees of the Arctic Land Expedition under Captain Back for exploration of the northern coast of America in response to a letter from Captain James Clark Ross. Samuel Hunter Christie added to the Donation Fund Committee. An address to King William IV thanking him for his patronage of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes. Archdeacon Glover requested an extension of admission to the Fellowship, granted. Assigning Anthony Panizzi the assistance of Mr Roberton for his work in the library [compiling a catalogue of the Society's scientific books] during the Christmas period. Printing and distribution of the President's Anniversary day address. Gift of Greenwich observations and issues of The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society to the observatory at St Helena. Concludes with a note that Baily presented a report from the medal committee [not reproduced]. |
