DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Francis Baily; Peter Barlow; Benjamin Collins Brodie; Marc Isambard Brunel; John George Children; William Clift; Michael Faraday; Reverend Dr. Philip Jennings; Reverend George Peacock; William Hasledine Pepys; Reverend Adam Sedgwick; Captain William Henry Smyth; the Treasurer, John William Lubbock, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: new Council Members were sworn in and the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Report of the Finance Committee was read, full text entered into the minutes: on potential savings to be made in the Society's activities to meet the current deficit in accounts, and on the investment of sums received in composition of Fellows' annual fees. Mr. Hudson reported an error in the estimate of costs for printing the Meteorological Journal. Mr. J. F. Palmer of Golden Square applied to take impressions from the plates of John Hunter's papers, granted. The Treasurer's reading to be added to the Statement of Accounts, printed and circulated to Fellows. Mr. Stratford applied for volumes of Dr. Maskelyne's observations for use in the Nautical Almanac Library, granted. Letter from Mr. Philips stating that Davies Gilbert had presented his portrait to the Royal Society, President's and Council's thanks given.
