DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Sir William Burnett; Samuel Hunter Christie; Thomas Galloway; William Robert Grove; Peter Mark Roget; Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Sabine; Captain William Henry Smyth; Charles Wheatstone; the Treasurer, George Rennie, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Resolved that the Charter Committee should obtain, through the Society's solicitor, the opinions of the Attorney-General and Solicitor-General on effecting recommendations by Statute. Appointment of auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. Resolved that Mr. Forbes's paper on glacier motion form the Bakerian Lecture for that year; and that Mr. Grove's paper on voltaic ignition and decomposition of water form the Bakerian Lecture for next year. List of bills to be paid for printing, engraving and for other services. The Secretary reported on the Assistant Secretary's cleaning of books and the calling in of loans; one exception being a volume of tracts loaned to Lord Brougham and not recovered despite many requests. Professor E. Wartmann added to the list of those receiving copies of the Greenwich Magnetical Observations. Professor Matteucci's request for fifty extra copies of his paper granted.
