TitleMinutes of a meeting of Council of the Royal Society
Date14 July 1836
DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: John George Children; Joseph Henry Green; Dr. Henry Holland; Charles Konig; John William Lubbock; Herbert Mayo; Peter Mark Roget; Reverend William Whewell; the Treasurer, Francis Baily, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letters from Anthony Panizzi, British Museum, 8 and 14 July 1836, to Peter Mark Roget, with one letter, P. M. Roget, Bernard Street, 13 July 1836, to Anthony Panizzi, full text entered into the minutes: Panizzi's insistence that the resolutions of the Catalogue Committee be considered 'null and void' and that the detaining of corrections prevented him from proceeding with Council's resolution to expedite the process of printing. Roget requires a definite answer from Panizzi on his willingness to proceed with the revision of the catalogue already set up in type. Panizzi's reply that he did not feel bound by the orders of the Committee and that revisions of his work amount to an insult. He does not consent to any person making an alteration to his work. Council resolution that Panizzi should no longer be employed in the formation of the catalogue and that he should return revisions currently in his possession. Mr. R. Taylor ordered to print 25 copies of the portions of the catalogue in type, copies to be sent to the Catalogue and Library Committees for comment. Mr. Lubbock and Mr. Baily instructed to send to press the first four classes once corrected. Dr. Roget and Mr. Children to send to press the next two classes, once corrected.
