DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Dr. John Bostock; William Cavendish, Earl of Burlington; John George Children; Samuel Hunter Christie; William Willoughby Cole, Viscount Cole; Charles Konig; William Haseldine Pepys; Peter Mark Roget; Captain William Henry Smyth; William Henry Fox Talbot; the Treasurer, Francis Baily, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from Thomas Monck Mason, 32 Coleshill Street, Eaton Square, 20 June 1837, to John George Children, Secretary to the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: explaining his unconditional offer for the use of the Vauxhall Balloon which had been approved by Mr. Gye senior, the balloon's proprietor; he regrets that Mr. Gye junior, who had been deputed to attend the committee meeting, dissented from the arrangement. Letter from Marshall Hall, 14 Manchester Square, 8 June 1837, to Council of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: he has withdrawn his paper on bone marrow at the request of the Secretary, asking for a commission to observe his experiments and he has circulated a letter to individuals on Council; the proposal not to be acceeded to. Resolved that Mr. Fox Talbot's paper on 'Optical Phenomena of Crystals' to be selected for the Bakerian Lecture. Letter from the Reverend Edmund Antropus soliciting a subscription in aid of an Infant School in Acton, £10 donated. M. Passerini of Florence had sent a donation of insect specimens to the Society, these to be offered to the British Museum. Mr. Roberton to have leave of absence for the month of August, no books to be loaned from the Library. Letter from Lewis H. L. Tonna requesting the Royal Society's co-operation with the United Service Museum. Mr. Christie to apply to the Lords of the Admiralty to take steps for measuring variation and dip of the magnetic needle at various points on the coast and interior of Great Britain, motion deferred until next Council.
