DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Allen; Dr. John Bostock; John George Children; Samuel Hunter Christie; Joseph Henry Green; Charles Konig; John Lindley; John William Lubbock; Reverend George Peacock; William Haseldine Pepys; the Treasurer, Francis Baily, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Resolved that the difference in levels between Captain Lloyd's mark on London Bridge and Mr. Bevan's mark on Waterloo Bridge be determined, with expenses met from the Donation Fund; Sir John Rennie to be requested to conduct the work. Daily observations of the barometer at the Society's apartments to be given without any correction. Statement by Mr. Christie on the application to the Admiralty to determine the variation and dip of the magnetic needle in Great Britain and Ireland, full text entered into the minutes: noting the unsatisfactory state of current knowledge, outlining the observations that might be made and the type of instrument to be used, with the likely expenses and time taken; Council endorsed Christie's views and recommend them to the Admiralty.
