CitationWas for some twenty five years the scientific & mathematical advisor for the Ordnance Survey. His investigations on different subjects connected with Geodecy have been published in various volumes of the Ordnance Survey, in numerous scientific periodicals, & in the Transactions of the Royal Society.

In 1880 he published a book on Geodecy which, besides giving an accurate account of that science, embodies the main results of the work of his life.

For his comparisons of the Standards of Length of different countries, his investigations of the Figure of the Earth, which are generally accepted as giving the best approximation hitherto attained, he was awarded a Royal Medal by the Royal Society
