Title | Pickard, Sir Robert Howson: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Date stamp on reverse |
Citation | Principal and Head of the Chemistry Department of the Municipal Technical School, Blackburn. Author or joint author, with hid students, of origianal communications on the following subjects: - 'Hydroxyoxamides' (Trans Chem Soc, 1901-1902); 'Optically Active Carbinides' (ibid, 1904 and 1906-1907); 'Optically Active Reduced Naphthoic Acids' (ibid, 1905-1906 and 1909); 'Combining Power of Oxygen' (ibid, 1906-1907); 'Oxidation-Products of Cholesterols' (ibid, 1908); 'Optically Pure Alcohols of the Hydroaromatic and Terpene Series' (ibid, 1907 and 1912); 'Dependence of Rotatory Power on Chemical Constitution' (ibid, 1907 and 1911-1915). In the last group of papers particularly important results bearing on Sterochemical Theory have been obtained by the investigation of numerous new series of homologous optically active compounds and the discovery of esters which have very simple chemical constitution, but exhibit so-called abnormal optical dispersion. Dr Pickard is very widely known for his contributions to organic chemistry and as one of the foremost workers in the domain of sterochemistry. |
